AW Ship Management was established in 2014 to provide technical and crew management services built on experienced maritime professionals and systematic quality standards. From our London headquarters, we deliver comprehensive ship management that combines ISO-certified operations with personalized client service.
Foundation and Early Development (2014-2019)
Our founding team brought together decades of collective expertise in ship management, technical operations, and maritime services. This experience allowed us to establish credible operations immediately, providing technical management, crew solutions, and comprehensive maritime support to vessel owners from day one.
We recognised the importance of and investment in ISO certification programmes from the outset, ensuring our operations met rigorous standards for quality management, environmental performance, health and safety, and business continuity. These systematic approaches became the foundation for consistent, accountable service delivery whilst enabling us to compete for new business.
In 2016, we established AW Crewing Services on the Isle of Man to provide specialized crew management, recruitment, and personnel solutions. This dedicated operation enables us to deliver integrated support – from technical management in London to crew recruitment, payroll, certification management, and seafarer welfare through our Isle of Man base. We currently manage over 160 British Seafarers from the IoM, and a further 140 from our office in Barrow-in-Furness.
During these years we built our reputation for technical competence, proactive communication, and forging genuine partnership with clients. We developed systems balancing regulatory compliance with operational flexibility, understanding that vessel owners need management partners who adapt to changing circumstances while maintaining unwavering safety standards.
Joining the Hadley Shipping Group (2019)
In 2019, AW Ship Management became a subsidiary of the Hadley Shipping Group, a family-controlled British shipping company with heritage extending back to 1926. This acquisition aligned us with an organization sharing our commitment to safety, quality operations, and experienced maritime professionals.
The integration strengthened our position while preserving our operational independence and client-focused approach. We gained the support and experience of a financially stable, long-established British shipping company while continuing to deliver the personalized service our clients expect. The partnership proved mutually beneficial – Hadley gained in-house technical management capabilities for its fleet of RoRo vessels, while we gained access to a wealth of maritime experience, a new strategic perspective, and connection to a broader maritime family.

Growth and Capabilities (2019-Present)
Since becoming part of the Hadley Shipping Group, we've expanded our capabilities and deepened our expertise. We provide technical and crew management for diverse vessel types, from Foreland Shipping's RoRo fleet serving the UK Ministry of Defence to specialized research vessels like the RV Cefas Endeavour and a highly specialized fleet of vessels based in Barrow in Furness.
We’ve continued to invest in and enhance our certification portfolio with advanced cyber security accreditations including Cyber Essentials, Cyber Essentials Plus, and IASME Cyber Assured. We offer expert guidance on implementing the IASME Maritime Cyber Baseline, recognizing that cyber security is now as essential as traditional safety management in today's digitalized maritime environment.
Our ISO certifications – Quality Management (9001), Environmental Management (14001), Health & Safety (45001), and Business Continuity (22301) – remain central to operations and competing for new business. These represent systematic approaches ensuring consistency, accountability, and continuous improvement across every service we provide.
Our Approach and Values
The strength of AW Ship Management lies in our people. Our superintendents and marine engineers bring a lifetime of hands-on experience across diverse vessel types and global operations. Many sailed as senior officers before transitioning ashore, giving them practical understanding of shipboard realities and the challenges Masters and Chief Engineers face daily. We continue to only recruit and invest in the best people possible who will add to the overall AW Ship Management offering to its clients, both present and future
Throughout our history, certain principles have guided our work: technical excellence that maintains vessels to the highest standards regardless of market conditions; a partnership approach tailoring services to each owner's specific requirements rather than imposing one-size-fits-all solutions; safety without compromise as fundamental to every decision; transparent communication providing clear, honest reporting on vessel condition, performance, and costs; and continuous improvement investing in our people, systems, and capabilities to meet emerging challenges from decarbonization to digitalization. We do not attempt to compete with industrial ship managers but look for specific opportunities where we can add value.
